hat (clothing: headwear)

Hat, palm leaf, cane. Height 6"16" dia. Conical hat of layers of palm leaf stitched together and thin strips of bamboo. The rim is reinforced with rattan painted red and there is a small pommel of hard wood. Outer surface decorated with radiating bamboo strips painted red, and some similar strips painted black at regular angles between. Some of the patterning is achieved by painting sections of the palm leaf: in balck and red in the lower part, in yellow, pink, white and black in the upper part.[Described by donor as 'at that time just a hat worn by the local folk']
