There will be tree works in the Gardens this week – please follow signs on site. The lift will be out of service until Friday 28 June while we work on a replacement.
Vegetable fibre skirt made from a number o different plant materials around a layered belt of stout ropes. The inner layer is the longest and comprises a mixture of small striped leaf strips intermixed with tufts of separated coconut husk fibre; these take a dark reddish brown tone. Overlying these is an outer layer of wider pandanus leaf strips which have been slit into tassels at their lower ends and trimmed off at their upper ends to make a rosette like fringe.
These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database.
