This appears to be a good example of an old Zulu milk pail. The darkened projections near the mouth prevent the pail from slipping between the knees during milking. The fresh milk is then poured into clay vessels and soured before consuming.
These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database.
