paper weight

Carved jade paper weight of oval shape, decorated in shallow relief carving and depicting five bats flying around a spray of two peaches. Depicting bats and peaches together creates a wish for happiness and long life. Five bats (wu fu) in particular refer to a wish for the Five Blessings of life: health, long life, wealth, love of virtue and a natural death.

This item was probably presented as a birthday gift to a scholar and used as a paper weight.
