bucket (containers)

Circular wooden bucket formed of a flat section of wood for the base, and a section of wood bent into a circle for the sides, the two ends laced together with baleen. Handle of antler attached to the bucket at each end with baleen. The handle has six apertures carved along the length, formed by the shapes of whale tails, and with an incised decoration of whale tails. Two ivory slats attached to the exterior, one over the join, one immediately opposite, which are decorated with incisions into which black pigment has been rubbed forming repeating whale motifs.

There is an old display label with the object. Handwritten in white ink on white card painted black, it reads:
"WOODEN BUCKET, IVORY HANDLE: THE SIDES OF THE BUCKET CONSIST OF ONE PIECE OF WOOD, BENT ROUND AND LACED WITH SINEW. ESKIMO OF EAST CAPE, SIBERIA" 9.779 has been wrongly written on the label.
