The Lord Mayor at Surrey House Museum

One extract from the City Press describing the Lord Mayor’s visit to the Surrey House Museum on Thursday, the 29th of July. The Mayor and his company went through each of the sections making up the Museum at that time: Section I, the Reception Room, contained ancient and modern coins, and carved ivories; Section II of Ancient Manuscripts included a Biblical Library; Section III of Antiquities sheltered ancient artefacts from Greece, Egypt, Cyprus, Troy or Rome; Section IV was dedicated to Japanese curiosities; Section V, as the proper starting point of the Museum, housed a collection of armour together with cases of coral, humming and other birds; Section VI displayed a selection of encased butterflies and other insects from Africa and South America and, together with Section VII, also contained a great variety of artistic objects; Section VIII, the Saloon, was dedicated to ancient and modern china, porcelain and glass. The party was impressed by the quality and quantity of interesting objects, and ended their visit with a dinner with Mr. Horniman.
