According to Edward Hart, writing on 1 May 1927, 'Left (no 1): adult male, March 1877; right (no 2): adult female, November 1897, young and egg. No 1 shot by me at Podney, Christchurch. No 2 shot by me on Burton Meadows, Christchurch. Young and egg obtained at Alton, Hants. Sexes alike, summer and winter plumage the same. Mounted by me'.
