Taxidermy case of four adult male and three adult female Eurasian Dotterel. According to Edward Hart, writing on 23 April 1927, 'From far left (no 1): adult female, May 1854, summer plumage; (no 2): adult male, May 1854, summer plumage; (no 3): adult male, May 1854, summer plumage; (no 4): adult female, May 1854, summer plumage; (no 5): adult female, May 1854, summer plumage; (no 6): adult male, September 1876, winter plumage; (no 7): adult male, September 1894, winter plumage. Nos 1 to 5 were shot by my brother on the Portfields, Christchurch. Nos 6 and 7 were shot by me on the sand dunes at the Estuary, Christchurch. One morning in May 1854 a rivetter (of watch chains) told my brother she had seen a 'flock' of woodcock in the Portfields. On going to the place he found a 'trip' of these birds and easily secured the five here, which are in spring plumage. At this season the females are in brighter dress than the males. Sexes alike, summer and winter plumage differ. Sexes alike, summer and winter plumage differ. Nos 6 and 7 mounted by me. Nos 1 to 5 mounted by my brother'.
