According to Edward Hart, writing on 4 April 1927, 'Left (no 1): adult male, April 28th 1876, summer plumage; middle (no 2): adult female, August 18th 1876, summer plumage; right (no 3): adult male, January 1881, winter plumage. Shot by me at Portfields, Christchurch. Sexes differ in summer plumage. Alike in winter. Summer and winter plumage differ. Mounted by me'.
