
Album leaf painted with the journey of a mandarin returning back to his home town. He is depicted travelling in an official sedan chair , guanjiao, enclosed by green silk curtains, carried by nine guards and escorted by three officials. Two guards lead the way, carrying wooden boards declaring the purpose of the mandarin's trip. Watercolour and ink on pith. Artist unknown.
From an album entitled ‘A Chinese Mandarin, Life from the Cradle to the Grave’, brought from Shanghai by Capt. Geo. F. Thomas, of the China Tea Clipper ‘Omba’, which docked at Dover in1866.
