fan and case

Fan made from wooden struts with a paper blade and decorated in gold ground with a polychrome picture and Chinese characters. The case is of a tapered cylindrical design of woven silk tapestry with 'ruyi'-shaped top, edged with braided ribbon with blue and white chevrons. The case is open at the top with an attached pale blue silk strap loop handle embellished with blue and white stripes and two pink glass ovoid beads. The case is lined with stiffened undyed cotton. The exterior is woven with an interlocking swastika background and 'shou' characters, representing longevity, enclosed within floral medallions. The base is missing. The case was suspended from a belt and designed to hold a folding fan carried by both men and women in summer.
