Wire toy of man with shakers.
Hand operated children's toy for play. The wire of the small handle also has wires attached to it that connect to each arm so that when you turn the handle, the arms move up and down. The closed bottle tops attached to the ends of the arms contain small stones/seeds/beans to produce a soft rattling sound. In poor areas of Africa, many children have no access to manufactured toys and so made their own with scrap materials. Originally made only by children for themselves, wire toy making is now a profitable adult craft as the toys are sold to tourists and now provide a reliable income for many communities. Despite this recent commercial production, young boys continue to make wire toys for their own use and it is still common to see children playing with homemade toys.
