belt (general & multipurpose)

Belt

Strap of plaited vine-strip with embroidered pattern, for the head. The embroidered design is one of several characteristic of plaited straps and bands from Bougainville and Buka Islands, see Finsch, 1914, 499-503, Frizzi-Munchen, 1914, 26 and Ribbe, 1903, 266. These armbands were traded to New Georgia in the early colonial period, see Scales, 2003, Chapter 3. They are also attributed to Malaita (see Burt, Akin and Kaw’ioloa, 2009,130), so such ornaments were probably widely traded.
