blanket (clothing: outerwear); textile; pua kumbu

Long rectangular tabby woven cotton blanket ('pua kumbu') sewn together along the selvedges of 2 narrower pieces. The textile is decorated with a wide centre ikat stripe in cream and pink framed by 2 sets of stripes. The inner set of stripes consist of a ikat centre stripe containing 2 shorter linked diamond patterns framed with thin coloured stripes. The outer set of stripes consist of wider solidly-coloured stripes in blue, white, orange and pink. The centre stripe is decorated with a large section containing curvilinear and geometric motifs (possibly animal motifs ?). At both shorter sides this is framed by a set of bands. They consist of 2 cream-coloured bands, followed by a band containing pairs of linked figures separated by narrow geometric motifs. The edge is marked by a band of chain stitched zigzags in light, and dark blue, and white framed in yellow. The ends of the warp form a short fringe.
