Cap made of very fine cane basket work, bought from the maker in the market at Padang Pandjang, Sumatra. The cap is made of two layers of woven cane, stems of the climbing fern 'resam', Dicranopteris linearis. The inner layer is of loops, stitched in an expanding coil to form the top and then walls of the hat. It is black overall, with natural coloured cane at the top. The outer layer of the cap has a finer weave. It is also black overall, with bands of patterning in natural coloured cane. The cap has a flat top, and a hole in the centre.
