Text from Travellers Official Information Bureau in Batavia reads as follows: A Javanese actor from the Wayang Wong playing the role of Gatoet Kocho, the principal role in one of the many Javanese historical plays. Historically, the Wayang Wong is one of the youngest of the Javanese theatrical styles. The oldest was played like our marionette shows with painted wooden dolls. Later came the highly intricate and elaborately developed shadow plays, where the characters are cut out the leather ( hence the name of Wayang Kulit ) and are shown as moving picture shadows on a screen. In the later development the parts are taken by actual men and women from which fact it takes its name of Wayang Orang or Wong.
