











Rectangular iron chest, from Germany, made in the 16th century. It has a complex locking mechanism on the inside of the lid, and is painted with floral motifs on the exterior. An old display label with object in white on black reads: '(BELOW THIS CASE) / IRON CHEST TO HOLD PLATE / JEWELS, MONEY ETC. COMPLEX / LOCK IN THE LID (SEE ILLUSTRATION). / THESE ARE SOMETIMES MIS / CALLED "ARMADA CHESTS". / 16TH CENTURY GERMAN BUT THE / TYPE WAS USED IN ENGLAND'.
