According to Edward Hart, writing on 6 May 1927, 'Middle (no 1): adult female, April 24th 1882; right (no 2): adult male, summer plumage, April 24th 1882; young, July 1882. Obtained by me at Quay Meadows, Christchurch. Sexes differ; summer and winter plumage - male differs, female the same. Mounted by me'.
