stencil (textileworking: dyeing & printing); textile tool

Rectangular stencil for textile dyeing made from brown paper sized and stained with persimmon juice. The cut-out design consists of three sparrow motifs with plum blossom on their wings against a background of bamboo stems with leaves. The bamboo is arranged diagonally, and the ways they are cut creates the repeat for an overall printed pattern. The paper seems to have been made in 2 layers with a fine grid created from human hair in between. The lines show in fine relief through the paper, and are left intact in the cut-out design.
