sample; banner; textile

Rectangular panel, a sample or possibly a banner, consisting of multicoloured satin damask weave with unfinished shorter ends. The textile has a green ground with patterns in red, turquoise, blue, pink, yellow, black and gold-coloured metal strip. These create a centre panel, framed by a central band framed with fret borders. The central band contains a pair of repeat characters and a set of square outlines in each corner. A set of narrow and wider coloured stripes run along the outside. The panel contains a central medaillon consisting of a floral motif surrounded by 4 rings. The rings contain floral motifs or trapezoid medaillons decorated with paired birds amongst foliage. The whole medaillon is surrounded by 4 cranes against pine boughs above, and 2 sets of deer in a landscape surrounded by vines and floral sprays below. The motifs and patterns are mirrored along a central vertical axis. This is most obvious with the 2 lines containing characters and numbers at the top of the panel.
