According to Edward Hart, writing on 1 May 1927, 'Bottom left (no 1): adult male, 1859, winter plumage; top left (no 2): adult female, 1874, winter plumage; top right (no 3): adult male, 1873, winter plumage; bottom right (no 4): adult female, 1867, winter plumage. Shot by me in Christchurch Harbour. Sexes differ, summer and winter plumage differ. Mounted by me'.
